Ai! Hao Ren let out a long sigh; he knew what his grandmother meant but didn't know how to respond.
Despite her age, Grandma had clear eyes and could sense that Hao Ren had been avoiding Xie Yujia these past two days. Even when talking, it was just formalities without any intimacy.
The Radishes family once extended a helping hand during the most difficult times for Hao Ren's family, so Grandma was very upset with Hao Ren's evasive attitude towards them now.
Especially given how kind and considerate Xie Yujia is, there wasn't anything about her that Grandma disliked. She seemed even more filial than a granddaughter, making it hard for Grandma to bear the thought of letting her suffer from Hao Ren's cold treatment.
"Grandma," Hao Ren wanted to explain, but she didn't want to listen and went into her room.
That weekend, Lu L琳 and Lu 蔚莉didn’t come by, and Zhao Yanzi didn’t call once. Only Hao Ren and his grandmother were left in the villa, making it rather desolate.
This made Xie Yujia coming to help even more precious.
Lu L琳 and Lu 蔚莉were surely busy reviewing their lessons this week since they had just entered school and faced exams. No matter how smart they were, they still needed to take the exams seriously.
As for Zhao Yanzi, she was too young to fully understand her grandmother’s thoughts and hadn't thought of calling Grandma in Nanjing.
Afeter a dull weekend, on Sunday evening, Hao Ren packed up his things to go to school. Thinking about his grandmother being alone at home again, he felt a bit guilty.
"Okay, go then. It's fine for your grandma to be alone at home. Uncle Wang will come back tomorrow," Grandma said, seeing the guilty look on Hao Ren’s face.
Despite scolding Hao Ren because of Xie Yujia over two days, when she saw her grandson going to school, Grandma finally softened her heart.
"Alright then." Hao Ren put his backpack on and walked out.
He had just walked a dozen meters when he turned back and saw that Grandma was still standing in the doorway looking at him. His heart ached, and he suddenly went back.
"What is it Did you forget something" Grandma asked.
"No," Hao Ren smiled lightly, "or should I take you to live with Zi Purple’s family After my exams end in two days, I’ll take you to Zhejiang."
"Um…" Grandma hesitated. "You call Red Jade and see if it's convenient for them."
“Okay!” Hao Ren took out his phone and called her right there outside.
The call was picked up quickly; upon hearing that Grandma wanted to stay, Zhao Hongyu immediately said she would welcome her. This enthusiastic attitude made Hao Ren feel a bit embarrassed.
Grandma didn’t want to trouble Zi Purple’s family, but in fact, she still cared about Zi Purple and Zhao Hongyu.
Hao Ren found the car keys for his father's white Ford from inside the house and asked Grandma to pack some clothes. He started the car from the garage and drove her over to Zhao Yanzi’s place.
Zhao Hongyu's family had been eagerly awaiting their grandmother’s visit for two days. When they saw each other, both sides were a little emotional.
They arranged to put the grandmother in the same room as before and Zhao Hongyu invited Hao Ren to stay one more night. However, remembering his exam tomorrow, Hao Ren decided to go back to school.
Hao Ren was relieved when he saw her mood improve. When he noticed Zhao Yanzi's tiredness from yawning, he knew she had just returned from Nanjing and must have been exhausted this weekend.
As they walked outside, Hao Ren repeatedly thanked Zhao Hongyu for the hospitality while Zhao Hongyu didn't take it to heart.
"Purple has been running around with us all day. She's tired out; she hasn’t had a chance to greet you properly, don’t take it personally." She explained to Hao Ren.
"It’s fine, I know that's just how she is," Hao Ren smiled. Zhao Yanzi was somewhat proud and aloof at times, but this didn't mean she didn't care.
"Go take your exam with peace of mind. I plan to let Purple rest for two days before the birthday banquet," Zhao Hongyu said.
"Alright, Auntie also take care to rest as well." Hao Ren took out his keys and got into his white Ford car.
Zhao Yanzi’s garage could only park two cars, which meant that Hao Ren's car would need to be driven to school.
Driving towards the dormitories in the south district, he was about to find a spot that wasn’t too conspicuous but not too secluded when he suddenly saw Xie Yujia, wearing a black coat, blue jeans and gray canvas shoes. She had a backpack and was heading out of the south district dorms.
He thought for a moment then drove over and stopped in front of her.
"Eh Is it you" Xie Yujia saw Hao Ren, surprisedly called out. She almost thought someone had parked their car to block her way just like when she was younger and before people knew that her brother was Xie Wanjun. Later on, he personally came over to take care of the situation discreetly.
"Class President, where are you going so late" Hao Ren asked.
Recently, there had been ongoing construction around the school and often some vagrants would be seen loitering about. Seeing Xie Yujia out alone at night made him somewhat uneasy.
"Going to study at the library; our dorm has lights-out rules tonight. I planned on studying all night, oh my bicycle broke so I’m going to get it fixed after the exam," Xie Yujia wrapped her coat tighter and answered.
"Then...I’ll go with you." Hao Ren said.
"No need." Xie Yujia shook her head.
"It's okay, I was planning on studying all night too," Hao Ren got out of the car and opened the door for her.
Xie Yujia hesitated a moment before getting in.
The warm interior with soothing music contrasted sharply with the cold outside. Hao Ren again got into the car, driving away from the south district dorms toward the school building where his study materials were already packed in his backpack so there was no need to return to the dormitory.
“I didn’t expect...you could drive,” Xie Yujia said softly from behind.
"Don't mock me, driving is much easier than cooking," Hao Ren drove steadily through the campus roads and replied.
"If you come to school in a car, people will definitely think that your family is very rich." Xie Yujia added.
“It won’t be like that. I was planning on parking my car somewhere far away then walking back to our boys' dormitory 7. The Class President must be worried about the other girls thinking my family is wealthy and causing me trouble, right” Hao Ren asked while slightly turning his head.
Xie Yujia pursed her lips and said, "I didn't say that. Alright, focus on driving."
"However," the class monitor's family earns over ten thousand dollars a year, isn't that genuine humility" Hao Ren remarked.
The income of around ten thousand dollars was still their parents' modest estimate during casual conversations. Xie Yujia's father, Xie Ming, had expanded his business in America with several factories under his belt, earning far more than the mentioned figure. However, to avoid boasting and potentially offending his frugal old classmates who pursued research, he kept it low.
"This is my parents' money; they earned it through hard work. I only ask them for a few hundred dollars each month, and I believe one should earn their own living," Xie Yujia replied without hesitation.
Hao Ren admired Xie Yujia's independent spirit, knowing that these were her genuine thoughts. Even before he knew she was the same person as ‘Luo Bo’, he had secretly admired her for her serene yet ambitious attitude.
The car arrived at Building 13; Hao Ren locked it and walked in with Xie Yujia.
With only two days left until exams, there were fewer students reviewing here, making the place quieter. Initially, Hao Ren hadn’t planned to pull an all-nighter, but he was uneasy leaving Xie Yujia alone doing so. Moreover, he felt responsible for her.
Xie Yujia noticed Hao Ren following closely behind; she knew his thoughts well. Recently, there had been many strange rumors circulating around the school, and though she wasn’t sure of their authenticity, she had decided to stay out late studying and thus prepared some self-defense tools in her bag.
Now that Hao Ren was accompanying her willingly, it made her feel safe and secure, emotions that could never be bought or exchanged.
The time ticked by. The library on the first floor remained open for all-nighters. While Xie Yujia began to show signs of fatigue, sitting up briefly before dozing off again on the table, Hao Ren, using his Focus Mind technique, felt no weariness at all.
As he watched her slender arm resting under her soft cheek, Hao Ren could hardly believe that they were pulling an all-nighter together.
The other students in the room also rested, each in peculiar positions. Without Hao Ren watching over them, Xie Yujia wouldn’t have slept so soundly.
Seeing her breathing evenly and her eyelashes fluttering gently as she dreamt, Hao Ren decided to pass on a bit of energy from天地之氣 (Heaven-Earth Qi) through the tip of his finger to help her sleep better.
The exhausted Xie Yujia slept more soundly; even her breathing became longer and deeper.
Seeing how diligently she studied, Hao Ren felt that her efforts were geared towards becoming better in order to match up to the expectations of ‘the brother’.
Even though his own studies were lacking, Xie Yujia's determination had already been set. Whatever task at hand, she approached it with utmost seriousness, making her admirable.
"Hmm What time is it" Asleep and now awake, Xie Yujia opened her foggy eyes to ask Hao Ren beside her.
"It's two o'clock in the morning," Hao Ren replied. Simultaneously, his face flushed; he hadn’t been studying but had instead stared at Xie Yujia for the last couple of hours!
"Ah! There are still two books left to review!" Xie Yujia quickly sat up and rubbed her eyes while yawning widely before stretching.
This natural posture made Hao Ren think that Xie Yujia was incredibly cute in a different way.
"Why are you staring at me Aren't you going to study" Xie Yujia turned around, blinked and asked him.
"Oh, oh, I am studying," Hao Ren hurriedly lowered his head to open the book before him.
The time continued to pass; with nearly photographic memory, Hao Ren quickly reviewed all the subjects he needed to study. While he couldn't understand them as deeply as Xie Yujia did, passing with a few marks should be possible for him.
When four o'clock came around, Xie Yujia could no longer resist sleep once more; Hao Ren stood guard over her again. Besides being grateful for his stamina, she was also thankful for his attentive care.
However, her focus is now on the exams and she has no time to spare for anything else.
The dawn quietly arrives. Hao Ren gently releases his grip from Xie Yujia's fingertips. He gradually infuses a thread of vital energy into her body, nourishing her and ensuring that she sleeps well with充沛的精力。
It’s strange; I don’t feel the least bit tired after staying up all night.
After waking up again, Xie Yujia feels no pain in her waist or back. Everything in her mind is unusually clear.
"Thank you for keeping me company through the night! I’ll treat you to breakfast!" Xie Yujia picks up her things and says.
She thinks she slept well because Hao Ren was beside her, but what she doesn’t know is that Hao Ren had secretly infused four hours’ worth of vital energy into her body, which equates to the effort he needs eight to ten hours to cultivate.
"Sure! Thanks for treating me, Class President!" Hao Ren happily agrees.
They pack up and head to the cafeteria. The car is parked in the basement of a building, with Hao Ren planning to drive it away only after exams are over on Tuesday so as not to attract too much attention during these two days.
A night of quiet companionship seems to have bridged any gaps between them. Hao Ren busies himself buying breakfast items while Xie Yujia happily pays with her campus card.
Once the exams begin, everything becomes tense again. After a day’s worth of exams, Xie Yujia has to continue reviewing into the night, and Hao Ren will accompany her as he did before.
Zhao Jiayin and others find it inconceivable that Hao Ren and Xie Yujia are glued together during their exams over these two days.
In their minds, who doesn’t know that Hao Ren has found a "pillar" in the form of Xie Yujia Each time she takes an exam, she ranks first in her grade. The fact that they study together aside, this professional course exam is definitely one he needn't worry about failing.
Seeing their envious and resentful looks, Hao Ren doesn’t bother to explain as some things are indeed better left unmentioned.
Xie Yujia finishes all her exams. Hao Ren still has an additional professional course from last semester left to take.
The completely exam-free Xie Yujia goes to the school’s west gate to catch a ride home.
Upon getting off at the station, she doesn’t rush back home but heads to the market as usual to buy sweet meals for an elderly woman living in a shanty town nearby.
This elderly lady has lived alone with no major health issues for many years. According to others, she does have a son who rarely visits her.
Xie Yujia has been coming every weekend or holiday to keep the old woman company and visit her for several consecutive years already.
After finishing all of today’s exams, Xie Yujia finally lets out pent-up emotions. She watches the elderly lady eat the meal she bought while recounting some stories from herself.
Unsure whether the deaf old lady understands her words or not, after saying everything in her heart, Xie Yujia feels much better.
"Old Lady, my mood has been terrible lately. I’ve talked at length; hope you won’t take it to heart. Haha. Next time, I’ll tell you some happy stories." After half an hour of pouring out her feelings, Xie Yujia stands up and gently squeezes the elderly lady's bony hand with a hint of apology.
The deaf old woman lifts her head and gazes at Xie Yujia with blurred eyes. She reaches out and affectionately strokes the top of her head.
"Alright then, Old Lady. I have to go now; after exams are over, we’ll have two days off. Tomorrow and the day after, I'll come see you." Xie Yujia waves goodbye before slowly leaving.
In the dim light of this dilapidated room, the old lady sits silently on an old chair for a long time.
After a while, she suddenly sighs deeply: "Those who are passionate are left with nothing but sorrow; good dreams always fade quickly."
